Novae

BEYOND THE STARS by Artempo

_STORY STATEMENT

Galerie Artempo presents Artempo, a British artist living and working in Los Angeles. This work called Novae is based on a celestial event capturing the energy and forces of a black hole. The work is crafted through many hours of intense selection of materials which capture the energy, rhythm and feeling of gravity and movement. The polished surface reflects this idea of Novae, this light dissipates towards the centerpiece featuring hand inlayed polished white brass metal elements, which hold within them a true sense of feeling of shining stars.

‘’Our shining stars floating effortlessly, gravitating towards the event horizon, our centerpiece, creating the void.’’

Stargazing I find becomes a sense of release and reconnection to the wonders of nature, appreciating the grandeur of the universe and with this our human connection to it. The great, vast expanse of our galaxy appears slowly revealing itself from dusk into night, this has always been a powerful fascination. Allowing time to slowly drift, gazing deep into the abyss, this revolving vista strikes me as immensely humbling, I see that we are all children of the stars.

Our thoughts on the shaping of Novae’s sculptural form takes place within the notion of attraction and connectivity. The function of this dining table itself acts as an object which brings us together, physically, creating individual connections with one another. The centerpiece drives the energy and idea of attraction is sculpted as a circular gravitational force, representing the ultimate power of the universe. Our shining stars float effortlessly, gravitating towards the event horizon, our centerpiece, creating the void.

Artempo’s concepts derive deeply from extended ideas of Tsuba-niwa an idea of bringing a piece of nature into the home. Our fascination with this idea leads us to explore in many ways the macro and micro elements within nature. We focus on creating highly challenging, unique material combinations to help us to communicate our ideas into form.

The material selections are generally studies combined with individually selected materials from around the world, sourced to present the story of the work. Great significance and importance are placed on ever process and handling of the material as a sign of our honor and respect for the material as part of their connection to the work.
